Focus Energy provides innovative forecasting and optimization solutions that enable low cost, reliable and sustainable power systems. Specifically, our products for smart grid analytics, transmission-distribution operations and energy management allow utilities to realize the benefits of their advance metering infrastructure investments.
Building on core competencies in meteorology, applied mathematics and data analytics, Focus Energy’s solutions support major electric energy developers, utilities and traders. The services were developed in cooperation with Florida Power & Light and NextEra Energy Resources.
As President and General Manager of WindLogics and Focus Energy, Rich oversees the company’s strategic plan and execution. He is responsible for the company’s day-to-day operations and P&L performance. In addition, he supports the business development team and guides the company’s research and development programs.
Prior to joining WindLogics in 2010, Rich was Senior Director, Integrated Supply Chain, at Florida Power & Light/NextEra Energy, Inc., where he directed strategic sourcing initiatives for a $5 billion supply chain. At Ryder Systems, a leading transportation and logistics firm, he managed business planning and the transformation of a $750 million business unit. Rich began his career at General Electric. A graduate of their leadership program, he went on to manage a global GE workforce charged with improving the installation, maintenance, and reliability of their wind turbine fleet.
Rich is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has implemented countless Kaizen Events and Six Sigma projects at over a dozen Fortune 500 companies. He holds degrees in Information Systems and Operations Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
As CEO for WindLogics, Mark provides strategic direction to the company and expertise to the greater wind industry community. Mark enabled the company to build on years of research effort and apply itself to new renewable energy challenges. Under his leadership, the company has become an authority in the assessment, forecasting, operations and integration of renewable energy. Mark continues to focus his time on pushing new research and innovation for renewable energy and power systems.
Mark enjoys bridging the gap between advanced scientific and technical methods and the needs of the business world. He is frequently invited to speak at events sponsored by the American Wind Energy Association, Utility Wind Integration Group, IEEE, NERC and other industry and government groups. As a testament to these efforts, he served as a Technical Program Chair for AWEA’s WINDPOWER 2009 conference.
Mark joined WindLogics in 2000 and has over 25 years of entrepreneurial and management leadership experience in software and technology businesses. He holds degrees in Biochemistry and Biomedical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dennis Moon leads the WindLogics and Focus Energys’ Research Team in its studies of applied atmospheric science including mesoscale flows and modeling, boundary layer phenomena and climatic characterization. As Chief Scientist, he has directed the development of the wind energy study methodologies employed by WindLogics. In particular, he was responsible for the development of the mesoscale and microscale modeling system for characterizing spatial variability and the Enhanced-MCP™ methodology for predicting long-term wind variability.
In addition to this work, he provides senior technical direction for the scientific staff engaged in wind prospecting, resource assessment, forecasting, solar resource assessment, climatic normalization and government research and development. Members of Dennis’ research team include Ph.D.-level staff with special expertise in atmospheric sciences, modeling, climatology, learning systems and other disciplines.
Dennis joined WindLogics in 1991 and has over 20 years of professional experience in the application of advanced meteorological assimilation, modeling and analysis techniques to real-world problems. He has extensive experience in data analysis and numerical simulation of physical systems and is a world-recognized weather modeler. Prior to joining WindLogics, Dennis was a senior scientist at R-Scan Corporation and a member of the faculties at the University of Minnesota and at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Dennis holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from North Dakota State University.
